On June 6, Spain´s Cabinet has approved a law amending Articles 21 and 23 of the Civil Code. This will allow descendants of Spanish Jews the right to dual citizenship. Applicants will have to take a Spanish culture test in addition to having their ancient ties to the nation vetted by experts.
The project must now pass before Parliament for final approval.
This will take a few month. Possibly by the end of 2014, and will not take effect until six months after its publication in the Official Gazette.
Sephardic Jews who want to apply must have their heritage checked by the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities or by rabbis where they live.
The culture test will be developed by the Cervantes Institute, which promotes Spanish language and culture abroad.
